Trudi Cowan (00:12.59)
Welcome back everyone to another episode of the Financial Fofu Podcast. I'm Trudy Cowan and welcome back Sarah.
Sarah (00:22.157)
How's everybody going?
Trudi Cowan (00:24.59)
you realize that they can't respond.
Sarah (00:26.701)
Yeah, no, I say that pretty much every time now because I kind of feel like this year people are really struggling more than they have in previous years.
Trudi Cowan (00:28.014)
Thank you.
Trudi Cowan (00:35.214)
Yeah, it's definitely been a bit of a tough environment for a lot of my clients.
Sarah (00:42.669)
Yeah, I mean you and I have been talking about this coming now for 12 months at least. Our first event we held last May was specifically on this topic about the pending slowdown of market conditions and the impact that it would have on business and if you still had clients or inquiries they would be slower to commit and slower to pay and so I am definitely seeing that across the board.
Trudi Cowan (00:48.014)
Yeah, definitely.
Trudi Cowan (00:57.23)
Yeah.
Trudi Cowan (01:09.39)
Yes.
Sarah (01:09.549)
with my clients as well, that if they've still got clients, a lot of them don't, but if they still have clients, they're not getting paid. So it's not great for them.
Trudi Cowan (01:16.622)
Yeah, definitely a lot slower to get the cash out of customers at the moment.
Sarah (01:22.381)
Yes, very much the case. So, I mean, that's a perfect segue into the Better Business ONIX course, which is what we're talking about today. Yeah.
Trudi Cowan (01:29.326)
It certainly is. And look, this is a course that we've touched on a few times, probably in the last few episodes. But the course is now up and live and available for everyone to jump in and have a look at. So we wanted to give you a little bit more information about it. So Sarah, what is the Better Business Owners course?
Sarah (01:43.309)
Hmm.
Sarah (01:51.181)
So like as we just touched on one of the reasons that I created the Better Business Owners course was solely around making it easier for business owners to make more money with less stress. So the Better Business Owners course is now a 10 module course. We've got an exciting announcement that Trudy's tax modules are up and online. So it's 10 foundational master classes or modules.
that give you the knowledge that you need to have as a business owner to make better decisions faster. So it helps you build the confidence and the business acumen that really we don't get taught in school and often when you start a business or if you've been going for a while, you learn on the job. It takes about 10 to 20 years to learn that type of acumen. And we've...
Trudi Cowan (02:22.126)
Yeah.
Trudi Cowan (02:34.126)
It's funny, it's actually funny how many clients I have say, why didn't we get taught some of this stuff at school?
Sarah (02:39.117)
Yeah, I know. I know it's actually I've been in talks with the local high school about teaching some of this stuff and one of the teachers there I know personally and she said to me we actually do teach some of this stuff at our school. I wonder if that's because it's a regional school and they have an agricultural program as well. So perhaps it goes hand in hand with some of that. But yeah, just a little while. Potentially, yes. So.
Trudi Cowan (02:49.518)
Okay.
Trudi Cowan (02:56.43)
It's also been a little while since we've been at school, so maybe things have changed.
Sarah (03:06.861)
It was created with the sole purpose of allowing more people to access our content and our information at a time and price that suits them. Some people are not in a position, depending on business stage or current conditions, to engage professional advisors and seek out professional advice. And you and I are both a not cheap for a reason. We know our stuff.
Trudi Cowan (03:18.926)
Yeah.
Trudi Cowan (03:32.686)
Yeah.
Sarah (03:33.837)
really well and we're genuine and we care and we provide customer service but that comes with a price tag and not everyone is in a position to afford that price tag and I was asked multiple times or do you have any do you have anything that I could do before I met with you or is there any other way that like you know we could learn from you and obviously we have our podcast and we do lots of blogs and I've done master classes online as well but this allows people to come in at their own
Trudi Cowan (03:41.742)
Yeah.
Sarah (04:01.357)
stage of business and pick either the modules that they only want to do or go through the whole course from start to finish and completely change up their business mentality and mindset.
Trudi Cowan (04:11.662)
think it's probably also a great way if they want to engage with the business coach but they're not quite sure exactly in regards to what aspect this is a really great introductory way for them to come out of the course and go okay now I'm really focused I've learned all those skills and improve these sections but I really need some additional guidance in this one specific area and they can focus on their attention a bit better.
Sarah (04:19.437)
Yeah. Yeah.
Sarah (04:30.957)
And what it meant for my existing clients was that they've done it. This is the stuff that I've done with clients one to one for six plus years. Like, you know, lots of people have gone through the same sort of molding because whether you're a small startup business or a large tech firm, you usually have the same issues. I know that doesn't seem like that would be the case. They're just on different scales. And
Trudi Cowan (04:50.318)
Yeah.
Trudi Cowan (04:54.83)
Exactly, different scales, different size numbers, different size employees, different size everything. But it is still the same exact theories. So great segue, who is this course actually aimed at? Is it just for small business owners?
Sarah (04:58.765)
Yeah, it's the same theoretical issue though.
Sarah (05:09.357)
No, not at all. So people say to me, oh, well, you know, I've been in business for five years. I don't need your course. I can tell you right now you are the perfect candidate for this course. Why? Because you are the type of client that would come to me at this stage and ask for business coaching, but not know what you need business coaching on. And then I would have to go back and teach you all of the stuff that's in the course so that you had a great foundation for which we could then make decisions for the coaching to bring you the best return on investment. So.
Trudi Cowan (05:26.222)
Yeah.
Trudi Cowan (05:33.198)
Hmm.
Sarah (05:37.709)If you are in business full stop, this course is for you. If you have a micro business, this course is for you. If you have a large multi -million dollar business, this course is still for you because it's foundationally the same information. This course is also for your managers and your supervisors and decision makers within business or for those people that are employed listening to us in leadership or executive roles or maybe want to start a business.
Trudi Cowan (05:49.166)
Yep, the same, just different scale isn't it?
Bye.
Sarah (06:07.437)
This course is for you as well because if you build your business acumen, which is the end game of this course, you will make yourself an invaluable member of a business. We always talk about everyone being replaceable in business, right Trudy? Like you can replace a staff member. What you can't find these days is staff members that have the business acumen announced to make decisions for your business as if it was their business.
Trudi Cowan (06:33.55)
Yeah.
Sarah (06:33.869)
And that's what this course actually gives people is the ability to make better quality decisions.
Trudi Cowan (06:39.342)
So let's talk about what's actually in the course. So you mentioned 10 modules now. Yay. So two of them I've mentioned are tax modules. So one is a basics tax module that really takes you through the basic elements. How do I get an ABN? Do I need to register for GST? How exactly does a business pay?
Sarah (06:42.477)
Yep. What are our master classes? Yep. Yes. Now 10. Yeah. So.
Sarah (07:07.853)
Well, I'm going to stop you right there and wind back to the start. And there's a reason I'm saying that. The course was designed with a specific purpose for the learning so that you get the most out of each learning. And yes, you can start wherever you feel is best for you. But the reason that we put the tax modules on at the end wasn't just a timing thing. When I designed the course, I wanted them to have the learnings that they needed to have.
Trudi Cowan (07:27.31)
Hahaha!
Sarah (07:34.157)
to be able to make better decisions so that by the time they got to the tax modules, they actually understood the language, the terminology, the purpose, the outcomes, and how the planning was important. So our first module is actually business basics. So it talks through a range of different things, but realistically, it's looking at things like why are you in business? What is your brand and identity? Who is your target market? What are your entity types and structures?
Trudi Cowan (07:39.886)
Yeah.
Trudi Cowan (07:47.79)
Yes.
Sarah (08:02.221)
It touches a little bit on goals because obviously it's important at the start to know why you're in business and what your goals are. It's quite, it's probably one of our biggest modules. The first one that goes into a range of different things. The second module is on systems and processes. It talks to inefficiencies in business, the customer journey, lead funnels, client onboarding, the systems and processes that you're using in the business and what software you're using to manage that. What emerging tech.
Trudi Cowan (08:31.47)
And I think this is actually an important one for those businesses you said if they're five years in. This is a really common thing that I find because they've bootstrapped so early on and tried to keep costs down so low. Well, they're now in a position where they've got a bit of cash to be able to make some of these decisions to improve their processes.
Sarah (08:31.565)
could perhaps be beneficial.
Yeah, that's right. Mm hmm. Yes.
Sarah (08:48.173)
Exactly. And I struggle at times for either, even though I'm really direct communicator, people at home are probably giggling right now, to get across the message of why you should do this course and the benefits that will come back to you. What's the ROI? And that's a perfect example of a business owner. Often I still get people with clients that are sole traders. I had someone...
Trudi Cowan (08:56.27)
You
Sarah (09:15.277)
Tell me they've been trading for 20 years. Tell me earlier, what's today, Tuesday, late last week, they told me that they've been in business for 20 years and they want their son to take over, but they don't know how they're going to do the buying because they're trading as a partnership husband and wife, sorry, not soft trader. And they own all of their assets. So they've got all of these investment properties now as well that they've bought in their personal names and they've got no asset protection. And I'm like, you've been trading for 20 years. You should do the course.
Trudi Cowan (09:42.766)
Yes.
Sarah (09:44.909)
Like before you go off and try and get financial advice from a financial planner or come and see you or another accountant Do the course. I can't like for $275 for a systems and processes module. It is the cheapest Spend you will find for the knowledge gain that you will get Your ROI your return on investment will be high Yeah Or 55 times if you need to right?
Trudi Cowan (09:53.102)
Yeah.
Trudi Cowan (10:04.11)
Yeah, and you can take your time and you can watch it a second time if you need to. If you're faster.
Sarah (10:13.453)
You know, like it really comes down to where you're at personally in your life at that time and how well you take the data in as well, because we all have bad days. And I know I have to watch some things a couple of times over until it really goes into my brain for that reason. So from module two, we move into module three, quoting for profit, pricing for profit, understanding your financial statements. What is broke even? How do you calculate that? What does that look like for your business? Which then.
Trudi Cowan (10:19.918)
Yeah.
Trudi Cowan (10:39.822)
All topics that are really important in the current environment.
Sarah (10:43.341)
They are the difference between my businesses.
Trudi Cowan (10:45.646)
I mean, always important, but particularly in the current environment with people that are struggling a little bit at the moment with their profits.
Sarah (10:49.677)
Yeah, exactly. So the ones that have already done this work are the ones that are doing okay right now. Right. The ones that haven't done this work are the ones that are struggling to make ends meet right now. And I'm seeing more and more of that because then the next module is cashflow forecasting and none of them cashflow forecast. So there's a method in my madness as to how I designed the course so that the learnings would come together and come around to actually assist you.
Trudi Cowan (10:55.502)
Mm.
Trudi Cowan (11:08.206)
Yes.
Sarah (11:19.405)
with your growth as a business owner and the development of that business owner mindset. So cashflow forecasting obviously is again, taking the data from module three, that break even figure and planning out your forecast or your cash flows for the next 12, 18 months, whatever you choose to do and how that then impacts your bank account and your ability to trade right now. The next module is on business goals and I don't call it business planning.
Trudi Cowan (11:40.878)
Yeah.
Sarah (11:47.533)
only because you can't do business planning if you don't have business goals. And we break down a range of different things and we talk about your five -year plan, your 12 -month plan, how do you get there, what is a roadmap, what is an action plan, how do you bring a business success map into that and tailor all of those concepts in a way that they become a mindset rather than a piece of paper. Because you and I have always talked about a business plan is not a piece of paper that you sit on the wall or an ice folder, it's what's in the brain.
and how do you utilize that to make better decisions? This is where we're going at. There's a reason it's called the Bit of Business Owners Course. There's a reason why it's about making better business decisions because all of these modules link together and you really can't do one without the other. We have set it up so that you can technically do one without the other, but the idea would be is that you'd work your way through the total course, which then moves into building relationships. So module six is about building relationships and...
How do you go about like what is an elevator pitch and how do you build quality relationships and what can you do if you've got some social anxiety and you really don't like networking face to face and how do you create lasting relationships that bring you referrals and bring you repeat business? And then module seven looks at the culmination of all of the previous six modules of creating a sustainable and holistic business, something that you can sell. Like what are your exit strategies? How do you...
What boundaries do you have in business and how do you create them to have a saleable asset? That one that hasn't completely, you know, driven you into the ground because it has run your life. Yeah, because it's run your life. I just read a post and they were talking about how has anyone just ever like told their customers they can't work from it anymore, told their staff they can't employment them anymore and just gone back to being a one man band. We are so fed up and done trying to keep everyone happy.
Trudi Cowan (13:24.558)
Yes, one with a bit of balance.
Sarah (13:43.405)
all of the time and not make any money and do so. And it's like, mm -hmm, definitely get it. But there's some things that have allowed you to... No.
Trudi Cowan (13:49.102)
Yeah, and it's not an uncommon story, but there's ways to improve that situation.
Sarah (13:56.365)
Yeah, foresight, broad scanning, two things that we teach about in the course. So the final module is on being a better business owner and that's your emotional intelligence in business, your business acumen skill and how you bring them all together to actually make better quality business decisions. Which is why then when we've now put the tax modules in of business tax, basic and advanced tax.
They come together and they culminate really nicely to give you that really strong foundational piece to either level up your business and that leveling up your business may also be scaling it down. It may be scaling it up, it may be scaling it sideways, but it also is beneficial for anybody that's in business or in a leadership role or wanting a leadership role. It's the best way to make yourself different, unique and irreplaceable compared to the next person.
Trudi Cowan (14:38.414)
Yeah.
Trudi Cowan (14:50.99)
really strong skill set that's very useful in any business.
Sarah (14:52.045)
in business.
So Trudy, will you tell us what's in the tax modules?
Trudi Cowan (14:59.31)
So there's two tax modules. The first one, as I was saying, is a business basics tax course. So we're talking about things like, what do I need to know when I'm first starting up a business? What are my interactions with the ATO? What's GST and when do I need to register it? ABN, superannuation, payroll, all of these sort of really basic things that are fundamental for any person that's starting up a business. Yeah. And whereas,
Sarah (15:25.933) Yeah, yeah, we can't ignore them.
Trudi Cowan (15:29.102)
Yeah, you can't ignore them. Whereas our advanced tax course is going through some topics which are for those business owners that understand their fundamentals, but they want to have more of an understanding of how tax works in their business. So we're having a look at things like how do I actually get the cash out of my business? How do I pay myself? Really common question and also often done wrong. You know, if you're talking to your mates down the parlor in your Facebook groups, there's lots of misinformation around there about
Sarah (15:46.317)
Yeah, common question.
Sarah (15:52.429)
Mm -hmm.
Trudi Cowan (15:57.966)
the right way to do it. So it's really important to understand the best way and the accurate way to do it. We also talk about personal services income. So if you are a services business, it's really important to understand how the PSI and PSB rules apply in your business. We talk about fringe benefits tax. We talk about tax planning and we also talk about exit planning because even if you're not planning on exiting your business right now, you know, you mentioned it before, you want to have a saleable asset. And so it's really important to make sure that you're doing that.
Sarah (15:58.413)
constantly.
Sarah (16:19.935)
Mm -hmm.
Trudi Cowan (16:27.854)
planning in advance so that when the time comes you have got an asset that's saleable and it's able to be sold in a tax efficient manner.
Sarah (16:36.717)
One of the clients I'm working with right now, I've had him for 20 years and he's had a couple of different iterations of business and bought a partner out, changed his structure. Structure doesn't work to bring a new partner in, so he's had to change his structure again. Because at the time when he bought the last partner out and changed his structure, he was like, nah, I'm not having another business partner. Things have changed and the structure he chose at the time, had he had one that was slightly different, he would have not had to change everything. So.
Trudi Cowan (16:49.39)
Yeah. Yeah.
Trudi Cowan (17:01.198)
Yeah, would have worked better. So having the foresight, you know, for those sorts of things is really, really helpful. So how do we buy this course? You sort of mentioned about bundles and individuals and how does it work?
Sarah (17:15.693)
Yeah, so you can head to courses .helixplan .com .au. All of them are listed on that platform. We run through the Thinky Fic Learning Management System, which gives you full access via mobile or desktop use. And you can purchase the course in a couple of different ways. So you can buy the modules individually for $275. You can buy the first eight modules.
for a bundled price saving you 400 bucks or so at 17 .50. Or you can buy all 10 modules. So it would normally be 27 .50 for 2100. So we're giving you 650 bucks off, which is two and a half modules for free effectively when you buy it as a bundle. So we acknowledge though that not everybody can afford the upfront cost and the outlay. So you can buy the modules individually. We are also offering the two tax modules as standalone.
and they're again, 275 each or 495 as a bundle. And we're offering now the two financial modules from the first part of the course for the same price as a bundle. So you can get how to quote for profit or price for profit and cashflow forecasting for 495 as a bundle. And we've bundled them together for 925. So you can have four modules.
for 9 .25. So there's so... We have literally broken it down in as many ways as we possibly could to give you the best return on your money for what we think you may choose to need. So a lot of my business owners that have been in business for a while tell me that they don't need the first two modules and the last four modules. I don't agree with them, but you know.
Trudi Cowan (18:43.694)
There are lots of different options really, flexibility and how you want to choose your courses.
Sarah (19:09.677)
customer gets what the customer wants. So they can now get modules three and four and effectively nine and 10 without having to purchase the other modules. I can tell you right now though, you will do those modules and then go and go back and buy the other ones. But you know, you've got to work that through on your customer journey yourself. And we cover customer journey in module two. So, um,
Trudi Cowan (19:09.678)
Say it twice, yeah.
Trudi Cowan (19:23.982)
Hahaha!
Sarah (19:33.197)
Lots of different things in there, ultimately designed to bring you more money with less stress. So the sooner you...
Trudi Cowan (19:39.822)
Yes, that's going to be my final question. Why? Why should everyone go and sign up? Why should they do this course? And that's what we always want to know. What's our return on investment?
Sarah (19:46.637)
Yes. Look, anything in business as a business owner myself, anything has to have a return on investment, right? I don't do anything unless I've calculated somewhat of a return on investment. Will I get two times my money back? Will I get 10 times client for the cost of that advertising, which will probably pay for itself or I'll make three times the money if I do nothing kind of thing. So everything that I do strategically is about return on investment.
And I have always followed that pathway when it comes to Helix and the types of packages or services that I've offered, which is why I haven't locked you into a six month coaching course that you have to pay an installment on or a 12 month program that's going to cost you $25 ,000. It's always been pay as you go or buy as you go as per your needs. And I didn't lock you into ongoing coaching as a result. So the same thing applies with this course.
You do it because it brings you the skills that you need to have. It's like having a business coach in a box there all of the time to answer those questions. And we actually also have a once off half price coaching session that you can also take up the same price of $2 .75. If you get to the end of the course and you have questions or concerns, or if you finally know...
what it is that you now need to ask a business coach about as to whether or not it's achievable or something that you should look into further. Yes. No, actually I've offered it for anybody that takes any, because like we just said, some people may only need modules three and four. And so you can take that with any of the modules.
Trudi Cowan (21:13.166)
So is that just available with the full bundle of the egg?
Trudi Cowan (21:30.35)
So that's a really valuable discount for people to be aware of.
Sarah (21:33.261)
half price, but you have to do at least one module of the course to access that to have the one -to -one with me. And I'm putting Trudy on the spot here, but is that something that you might offer for the tax modules? So there you go guys. Like we are offering amazing content, knowledge and value because that's what it's got to come down to. And so the argument would be, but yeah, like how will I know this will make a difference? Well, I'm not you. I can't be you. I can't control your decisions that you make.
Trudi Cowan (21:42.158)
I'd be happy to offer that too.
Trudi Cowan (22:00.558)
So, so, so,
Sarah (22:02.957)
It will take time to filter through the knowledge that you learn. This is the same that happens with one -to -one coaching clients. But I can guarantee you if you put in place the theory that we talk about with all of the workbooks, which we haven't even discussed yet, like there's so much available resources. Yeah, it's not just. Yeah, it's not just a recorded video that you get to watch. It is.
Trudi Cowan (22:16.43)
Yeah, many workbooks and resources and tools and worksheets. There's lots of other additional bits and pieces in there on top of the masterclasses.
Trudi Cowan (22:29.326)
No.
Sarah (22:30.797)
workbooks after workbooks after workbooks, which you can use so that you have got unique data that you can then apply to your business immediately. So you can do a module, apply that information, do a module, apply that information. And yeah, just an amazing amount of content and resources that are in there that really are invaluable. If you do those resources and you complete the content requirements, there is absolutely no way that your business can't change.
unless you're choosing for it to not change. And that's a whole different podcast episode on self -sabotaging. That perhaps we will record in the future.
Trudi Cowan (23:05.582)
Any final words Sarah before we wrap up? Is there a favourite unit? Is there one that you want everyone to do? No, we've covered everything.
Sarah (23:12.909)
Nah, I've pretty much spoken straight up. Favorite unit? Ooh. Ooh, I did like relationship building. I think that one was really fun. Key references to the Princess Bride in there. Don't know if you remember the movie. I did really like that one. And I think Module 8, to be honest, 20 years in business, Module 8, I've been there for a long time.
Trudi Cowan (23:23.886)
Yeah.
Sarah (23:42.829)
but it took me the first 15 years to get there. And so had I known the information of, you know, modules one to seven earlier, man, business would have been so different for me. Looking at your tax modules too, I like advanced tax. I think what's listed in advanced tax, but again, you can't do advanced tax unless you've done business tax basics really, because it lays the foundations for the second module. So all of the modules are great content.
Trudi Cowan (24:08.526)
Yeah.
Sarah (24:12.557)
All of the modules are things I'm passionate about because I tell you right now, I wouldn't have been able to talk to them for the length of the time in each module if I wasn't. But yeah, they're probably the main ones, six, eight, and yeah, nine and ten.
Trudi Cowan (24:14.606)
Yeah.
Trudi Cowan (24:24.622)
If anyone's got any questions about the course, reach out, let us know, call Sarah. Happy to have a chat and talk you through what's gonna work best for you.
Sarah (24:28.717)
Call me, call me.
Sarah (24:35.853)
Yeah, I'm hands down just pick up the phone and give me a call. You and I have said this before. Yes, you can email me, you can text me, you can send me a message on Messenger or WhatsApp or... You get your answer much faster every time you pick up the phone and call somebody. So yeah, I can't wait to hear more feedback. I've had clients this week purchase it for themselves and their lead supervisor in trade -based businesses because they...
Trudi Cowan (24:44.142)
phone works even better.
Yeah.
Yeah, perfect.
Sarah (25:04.365)
They are prepping him for succession and the best way to do that was to give him some business acumen, which he doesn't have. And that came as a result of a coaching call that we had and I was like, he should know by now these. So let's have a look at how he's making his decisions. And so that's where we were like, let him do the course and then we'll look to do some coaching with him one to one. Yeah, so I'm really keen to get some more feedback as we roll out now that we've got these tax modules.
Trudi Cowan (25:06.414)
Yeah, that's it.
Trudi Cowan (25:32.366)
Mmm.
Sarah (25:32.813)
and these master classes is what people are thinking. So my one piece of advice today is stop thinking about it. Just do it. Even if you start with one module, start with one module and go from there. So this content is actually, I've been invited by quite a few local council regions. Oh, what are they? LGA's to actually come in and teach this content. So I'm in Coffs Harbour in May, four times with different groups teaching.
Trudi Cowan (25:39.79)
Let's do it.
Trudi Cowan (26:00.462)
Oh wow.
Sarah (26:02.253)
teaching the content of modules three and four because there's such a demand for it in the marketplace and it's where economic development teams are seeing the need for this information to be shared. So yeah, can't wait to see what people think about it. Alrighty, well, we next time two weeks from now. Cheers guys, bye.
Trudi Cowan (26:05.966)
Yeah, there really isn't a moment. It's really important that moment.
Trudi Cowan (26:16.558)
Perfect. All right. Well, thank you everybody. We will see you next time.
Yeah, sorry. Bye.
